TPH Cypress: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

The inspiration behind TPH Cypress lies in the high skill level of Japanese craftsmen and the delicate craftsmanship unique to Japan. Otaka wanted to create an item that is a staple in every household, yet doesn't compromise on design. After the success of the TPH leather and steel materials in 2019-2020, Otaka envisioned a modern and beautiful holder made from traditional Japanese material, cypress.

What sets TPH Cypress apart from other tissue paper holders is its simple and minimal shape. Paper is sandwiched between two inverted V-shaped trays and taken out from the top. The holder is made using the traditional "Hikimage" technique, a special method that involves making a cut in a tree and bending it. A metal fitting is attached to the back side of the upper tray, increasing the weight and reducing friction, enabling smooth removal of tissue paper. Kiso cypress, known for its antibacterial properties, beautiful grain, and refreshing scent, adds to the uniqueness of this design.

The realization of TPH Cypress involved the expertise of Japanese craftsmen in Kiso Town, Nagano Prefecture. They employed the traditional "Hikimage" technique to create this product. Kiso cypress, known for its high antibacterial properties, proved to be the ideal material for a tissue paper holder.

The TPH Cypress project started in April 2019 in Kisohirasawa, Nagano. The sample was finished in October 2019 and was announced at the venue of OMOTENASHI selection in December 2019. The project faced several challenges, including reproducing the optimum angle with HIKIMAGE and ensuring smooth removal of tissue paper. These were overcome by careful calculation of the number of cuts and the distance considering the thickness of the board, and by attaching a brass hemisphere to the bottom of the top tray.

TPH Cypress is not just a tissue paper holder; it's a testament to the fusion of tradition and innovation. It's a product that brings the healing scent of cypress into homes, creating a relaxing space. It's also a way to keep traditional Japanese techniques alive in the face of inexpensive chemical materials. The TPH Cypress, with its simple and minimal design, is a beautiful addition to any home, and a deserving winner of the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2021.
